About the Artist
Ginny Lagos is the artist behind Catbirddog, creating individual animal sculptures from a shared ceramics studio on Gadigal land in Sydney. Working with a variety of clays, she gives cats, birds and dogs distinctive silhouettes and expressive personalities. Her work draws on folk and outsider art, ancient architecture and medieval depictions of animals, bringing a playful sensibility to familiar forms.
Material is central to Ginny’s practice. Her sculptures are often left unglazed or finished with paint or wax, allowing the character of the clay to remain visible. She also works with plaster, fabric and cardboard. Across these materials, her animals balance humour with an appreciation of form, texture and the possibilities of making by hand.
Ginny’s cats, birds and dogs explore the shapes and personalities of familiar animals through simplified, expressive sculptural forms.
Clay, paint and wax offer different surface qualities, giving each piece a tactile presence while keeping the material at the heart of the work.
Inspired by folk art and historical animal imagery, each sculpture brings together a light-hearted character and a thoughtful attention to form.
